American abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler once said, “I don’t start with a colour order, but find the colours as I go.”
Colours, each with their own presence, character, identity, meaning, power, contribution and stature provide indescribable levels of depth, variety, subjectivity and versatility to Creators. A sequential or orderly path might not be a singular approach to take or make. Different approaches, methods, pathways, channels and inferences could lead to new doors to open or old doors to close. Either way a door or window comes through to explore endless new possibilities. For colours have no fixed limitation : pure colours, mixed colours, tints, tones and shades.
Technically, deciphering colour becomes clearer as we spend more time with them and become more familiar with them. I feel colours are like people. The more time you spend time with them, the better you get to know them and more the credible chances you can predict how they will respond to understand who they are, with more clarity through our works’ visual language. Colours are like beings in themselves to be perceived ; their own qualities through symbolism, their own characters through mixing or matching, their own shades, their visual behaviour in terms of relationship between them in a composition, through combinations or when mixed and applied and ultimately, a joint contribution to form a functional composition. Finding the intricacies as we go on, in the process of Creation as Creators can be so much fun!
A journey of experimentation, exploration, discovery, repetition or monotony, newness or old resemblance, finding the colours as we go can evolve into a process which could be eye opening or turn our world’s points totally. It could be about spontaneous creation or premeditated planning. It could be about painting a feeling on the spot, or painting a concept that’s been brewing in the thought pot. The curiosity behind the ‘finding’ is what makes discovering or composing colour interesting, intriguing and enjoyable. Depth and Authenticity show up then, as naturals and sail along, whether calm or stormy seas, until and beyond a defined, tangible end to the Creation.
With the flow of colours we go, let’s see what we find and how it will go! Colours Carry Away!
What we as Creators start with therefore, need not be a colour order, we could find our colours along the way, from where we go, where to, how and why!
