An Introduction

Perceiving art is the main part of buying art too. Contrary to popular opinion, Perceiving art determines everything else about the experience, impact and memory of any artwork. The initial glance of an artwork often gives us an idea if at first sight, we like it or not. But this doesn’t need to remain the same towards the end of a perceptive process. Especially in the case of abstract paintings where the visual and narrative can differ greatly, and perceived energies can differ greatly too. But why is this so? Let us dive deeper into the factors that facilitate perception of an artwork later in this article and for now also take a sneak peek into the lives of commerce in the art world which is what actually keeps the business machinery running.

According to the highlights of the Art Basel and UBS Art Report of 2024 by Artsy, “Total global art sales in 2024 decreased by 12% to an estimated $57.5 billion, a much sharper decline than in 2023, when sales dipped by 4% year-on-year. Sales declines were observed across both dealer and public auction sales. Dealer sales values fell by 6% to $34.1 billion, and public auction sales experienced a sharper decrease of 25%. In contrast, private sales conducted by auction houses showed a 14% increase compared to the previous year.

However, the art market saw an increase in sales volume—the overall number of transactions—which rose by 3% to 40.5 million transactions in 2024. This builds on last year’s increase of 4% and continues a trend of increased transaction volumes since the COVID-19 pandemic, partly thanks to online channels. “The four-year period of post-pandemic growth in volumes has also been driven by the acceleration in the digitization of the market, with the expansion of online sales allowing the market to increase the volume of transactions,” noted the report.

The “main drag” on overall market growth, the report found, is at the top end of the market where “volumes are much thinner.” The number of lower-priced artworks being sold, however, experienced continued growth. In 2022, transactions for artworks priced below $50,000 accounted for 73% of dealers’ sales. This percentage increased significantly by 13% in 2023 and then stabilized at an 85% share in 2024.

Online art sales maintained their share of total sales at 18% in 2024, consistent with the previous year and notably higher than pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, online sales made up just 13% of total dealer sales, underscoring the substantial, long-term growth in the segment. In 2024, online sales represented 22% of total dealer sales, a slight decrease of 1% from 2023. Notably, the proportion of online dealer sales to new buyers rose to 46%, up from 35% in 2023, indicating a growing trend of new market entrants choosing digital channels as their point of access. This was mirrored in the auction sector, the report stated: “E-commerce is a key entry point to the market for new buyers for dealers and at auction.

Online channels have been consistently identified as the main source of new buyers for auction houses, and almost half of the sales dealers made online in 2024 were to new buyers.” Amid the general slowdown in the market overall, online sales dipped by 11% to $10.5 billion—still 76% above the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

The U.K. was the world’s second-largest art market in 2024, accounting for 18% of global sales by value. While this represents a 1% increase in market share year-on-year, sales in the U.K. declined by 5% to $10.4 billion. This places the U.K. above China, which was the second-largest market by share in 2023. China’s global share of art sales dipped 4% year-on-year to represent 15% of the global market in 2024. Art sales in China declined by 31% year-on-year to reach their lowest level since 2009. The report cited several challenges facing its market, including slower economic growth and a persistent slump in the property market. The United States maintained its lead as the dominant global art market, accounting for 43% of global sales, an increase of 1% from last year. Still, sales in the country declined by 10% year-on-year to $27.2 billion. In the E.U., overall sales fell by 8% to $8.3 billion, and included a 10% sales decline in France. In Asia, markets showed “varied” performance, the report found. Looking at these stats, what we see a moving, evolving, constantly dynamic, shifting and ever-changing art market where trends can be forecasted roughly but not exactly predicted or anticipated. The industry being highly subjective with most of its revenues coming out of some of wealthiest pockets in the world, the market needs more analysis, more data nation-wise and estimable market information for better international trend forecasting. With an auction almost every week taking off to fame, the stature of the masters, that is, the master painters have gone up so immensely that the scenarios of the given and taken and the perceived and the purchased have become blurred lines or mostly about the latter.

Paintings are seen from different lenses in variant contexts. Sometimes as treasures to creators and collectors, supply to auctioneers and commodified up to some extent in my eyes when the prices get exorbitant in most auctions for most paintings of the masters, classical or impressionist, abstract artists or expressionist masters. Even contemporary paintings masters, whether canvas paintings, sculptures, or print-made masterpieces. Why I feel they are commodified to some extent is because the lens then becomes that of a status symbol then and the act of saying I paid so much to get this painting into my home or office room, and it made news. There is a sanctity to a painting being created with so much love, effort and energy by a Creator whether it be realistic or abstract artists.

There can be multiple ramifications to what is being perceived and why it is being purchased or not. When a viewer becomes a buyer, there may be a variety of reasons and purposes as mentioned earlier but now in this case, we will discuss a viewer who becomes a buyer because he wants to be daily viewer and have that energy in his or her home or office spaces which they inhabit daily. An abstract painting for homes or offices can bring about an enhanced energetic environment with a lot of promise and enriched ambience to offer to the best. The experience of an artwork stays so powerfully with some people that they choose to treasure that experience and keep the artwork as the memory in the space whether abstract paintings for homes or abstract paintings for offices or canvas paintings or sculptures, wall murals and so on.

Creative Conception and Created Perception

 When creating, we as abstract artists perceive and execute an ideation process into an abstract painting for sale that is then perceived and resonated with, in order to be put up in a space where it is made to belong after the place where it’s made. There is an understated beauty about how seamlessly the painting makes its new home in a clients’ home or office after the artists’ studio and this lies in the transitional but consistent energies and character or personality of an abstract painting. There is something unconventionally powerful about abstract paintings and they often strike an emotional chord too which viewers resonate a lot with and therefore, it becomes special.

Creative processes may differ solely and fundamentally based on perception of the creator. For example, if given the same topic of drawing a village scene, something objective and understood, two people would draw the same subject differently and that is only because they see differently, think differently, work differently and all because each person perceives and experiences differently. There can be various ways to then, perceive that which is created and these sensitivities as well as high levels of subjectivity, both, of creating an abstract painting for sale or, of viewing the abstract paintings for homes or abstract paintings for offices, there is a distinct sensibility that even viewers see and resonate with, or have their own mindsets, reasons and purposes to turn buyers.

Canvas paintings that are realistically painted, can be perceived in multiple ways to be able to be masterfully produced. For example, practice is the best way to better the craft but independent of that, what we do in order to practice and how the practice is done makes a huge difference. The point here is that one could practice ‘en plein air’, that is, painting outdoors to get the most realistic experience of actually painting what one sees. There can be many possibilities with things changing on site such as the skies, clouds, light, shadow and so much more which is why mastering one moment in a live painting scenario becomes an incredibly masterful act to get through successfully.

There is also the technique of live modelling and photographic painting which are all different methods but, the understated beauty mentioned earlier as well shows another facet of its here where we see that each painting of en plein air same location or each painting of a live modelling schedule even for a portrait or just a still life set up could be different not only due to varying angles alone but also due to the different perceptions of each person and each person’s changing perceptions, themselves too. There can be no real talk about the objective correctness or incorrectness of a painting and that is why one cannot debate whether one is more correct than the other though, one may find a painting more special that another and thereby personally that painting might seem better to choose for oneself, but not if it merely looked good, although in many cases it is so. But, if the art has some deep meaning, some moving resonance and maybe also some more substance than it just looks beautiful to its credit.

Commerce is only how much the creator or dealer sells for and how much the buyer or dealer pays, but when commerce comes to art, the logic goes away beyond a point for how much it gets sold for or how much is paid for the painting especially masters’ paintings. Whether it is abstract paintings, canvas paintings for homes or abstract paintings for offices, abstract artists have always mostly got their due only after their passing like many of the artists we learn about in history excluding a few such as Michelangelo or Picasso who were rare cases that got the recognition for their greatness when they were alive and saw fruits of their labor and skill when they were alive, still not as much as they are getting for their work today, after they’ve died but whatever it was and is, that is the power of a legacy and that has been the unfortunate case with the masters we know today and we cherish today abut did not know what to do with their work at that time. Why?

Well, the good reason to look into in this context is that of perception and where that perception stems from in order to understand why it is made that way. Perception stems from the tuning of our minds – form social tunings, political tunings, economic tunings, physiological tunings, psychological tunings, physical tunings, contextual tunings, circumstantial and situational tunings and much more. All these factors tune our perception to be used to some things, to not allow somethings, to also perceive how much anything can be pushed or pulled in order to be received in a civil, peaceful, neutral if not positive, acknowledging manner.

There is a world of a difference in the way one responds to something and in the way one reacts to something. While a response is conscious and thought out, a rection comes instinctively and instantaneously subconsciously reacting immediately to what is being received. The received and the perceived therefore lead to the reacted and that leads to response long term or response in place of reaction too if people are that aware at the given moment upon receiving.

This leads to creating what one wants to be perceived and what one has perceived in the whole process of making, for instance, when an abstract artist paints an abstract painting from conceptualization to execution, it is each painting on a journey of its own giving us something as abstract artists too. When we get thinking, we realize that there cannot be an array of perceptive changes suddenly or out of the blue. If there is a ‘not perceived yet’ that needs to become ‘the perceived’ or the ‘to be perceived’, it needs to be addressed as to leaving it as ‘so be it’. It does become ‘the perceived’ and how? Well, art can be a life-changing, moving, emotional, intelligent and powerful way to make ‘the perceived’ common and understood, in a big way and create a change needed to evolve and progress, whatever the situation be that an artist feels need to be addressed or what someone feels needs to be addressed with art and chooses to collaborate with an artist for the same.

The catastrophe in this creative conception to the created perception comes when there is a gap in the communication of the voice of what is being said and what is being understood and sometimes when that goes wrong, the sensitivities could be triggered. There is always a right side and a wrong side for acknowledgment and offence because with art, it is exceedingly close to heart and emotion and so, sentiments getting hit bad or good happens like that – like the snap of a finger and support becomes heavily based on empathy as art is indeed about resonance as stated earlier which is why in this process for catastrophe mot to strike, one needs to be mindful of what one does, what one sees and what one perceives thereof to make the world a better space and not create further divide.

Intrinsic Sensitives and Extrinsic Capabilities

How we as an artistic community shape the viewers abilities to perceive acts as a lens and springboard for collective as well as individual impact upon reception of our work and perception of the done and to be done. The intrinsic sensitivities of the communities we work in or address in our work or see as audience(s) to our work need to be always kept in mind in order to get the dynamics of what an extrinsic impact looks; like in place to see what our work can do, and as to how capable it is to create talk and memory.

Sensitivities are directly linked to capabilities in a profound way which only art has the power to show you how and now one may ask how, so let’s answer that question – How? Well, art, let us speak of abstract painting in particular here, has since time immemorial, been a strong medium to communicate the underlying as well as overpowering essence of life. The sensitivities of let’s say a particular clan of people in a diverse society is to do with their religion, their mythology, their sacred beliefs, their systems, their practices, their devotion and their mindset of belonging and communal harmony.

When a work of art portrays all of this, any medium and any artist, with genuine intent and truth, with power and honesty and with sanctity and respect, good sense prevails, and people receive it well and with respect to. They acknowledge it and if it’s pushing some boundaries, they may be willing to accept and imagine even if it is a scenario or experience in the works that is sensorially or visually and more importantly deeply emotionally doing something for them.

That is how capable art, and abstract painting can be to touch lives, spread information, spread word, create awareness and powerfully bring communities together irrespective of wat makes us different to empathize with each other on humanitarian grounds and stand together for what is right and impactful.Having said that, I am not commodifying art to be activistic as a medium or a social responsibility alone, but I am saying art has power for anything – good, great, bad and ugly. It all depends on. Which side you are on, and which side the art is on.

Art according to me, having spoken of sides, never takes sides itself. Only the viewer of the art or abstract painting chooses what he or she wants the painting to tell her or him. There is no bias that a painting itself takes of course unless the artist chooses to tag it as a side being taken example of ‘Guernica’ by Pablo Picasso in support of the Spanish town of Guernica and many more places in Spain being bombed. But paintings like that, what an impact they’ve had then, when they were made as well as until now when we see such works and still feel so sad and emotional and admire how he has composed and painted it, from a technical standpoint as well.

Paintings therefore, become a medium for what we want it to be a medium for. They can do anything and transform the world of the audience to create a world of their own. This is where the artistic sensibility plays a role.

Artistic Sensibility in Perceiving and Creating and Viewers’ Mindset in Buying an artwork

The artist’s voice is what is most important. What is one trying to say with their work and how effectively are they able to convey it? This will shape the perception from one lens – Of the creator, for the viewer. What does. The viewer then do with the information received form the artist and how does the viewer build enough resonance and liking to buy it? It is a very internal process and is about a mindset that matches and says let’s buy this painting.

Artistic sensibility shapes the ‘to be perceived while the viewer’s mindset shaped ‘the perceived’. What one does, another doesn’t and what one doesn’t do, another one might. It is not definitive, objective or singular in lens or implication. There can be multiple ramifications to the creation process from the side of the abstract artist for example with an abstract paintings, whether it be customized paintings for homes, abstract paintings for homes or abstract paintings for offices, there is an angle in an abstract artists mind as to what this abstract painting would be construed as once it is out in the open for all to see; also because it doesn’t deal with form, it can have an abstract form but in a realistic sense it is formless, non-figurative and about elemental colors, lines, textures and concept to name a few factors.
