Medium is a means for Creation.
The Moss Wall (featured above) uses moss as a medium to engage viewers on multiple levels. To begin with, it engulfs the viewer with its sheer size! The robust texture and chromatic qualities of the moss project highlights and shadows in layers. The engagement extends to the aural sense and smell too. The moss wall is thus, an inspiration to understand the role of a medium in a creation; the medium in itself is the creation!
The technical aspects of what we call a medium lie not only in their physical usage but also beyond the physical. In the case of paintings, intangible realms created by the medium dwell deep into the perceived. On an emotional plane, different factors such as color, texture, pattern, saturation, lighting, elements of representation, form and strokes play a significant role in creating the impact.
What viewers experience depends not only on the medium but also on the relationship the medium has with the concept. This is the opportunity that a Creator has, to weave magic like how Olafur Eliasson has done here, binding his Icelandic origin with Reindeer Moss creating a deep sense of immersion!
