The fictitious in the fictional – Fauvism began in France in the late 1900s. French painters Henri Matisse and Andre Derain led the movement. Other painters in the movement included Georges Rouault, Charles Camoin, Albert Marquet, Maurice de Vlaminck and Georges Braque. Fauves meant wild beasts – named so, may be due to the robust, wild, colourful brush strokes they used on simplified drawings to create light and dimension. The creations were extremely colourful and provided enhanced scope for imagination. Tonal value – light and shadow – were showcased through warm colours and cool colours placed together instead of tints, tones or shades. This made perspective, scale and dimension in fauvist compositions very special.
The unreal colours opened up many doors in the creative process to experiment and offer new experiences. The sheer way in which mediums were applied on to the surfaces defined new kind of mastery. Inspired by the power of colour, majesty of light, relationship between colours and fierce brush strokes, the fauvist Creators painted magic onto their canvasses.
Henri Matisse’s masterpiece ‘Woman with a Hat’ (Femme au chapeau) featured above was created in 1905. Here, the light and shadow in warm and cool colours are clearly visible creating the form of the face and the hat. This creation encapsulates skill, grace, expression and a colourful background. It is also believed that the fauvist Creators developed the complementary colour theory – such as Blue and Orange, Purple and Yellow, Green and Red paired to create compositions in a way in which the colours didn’t look contrasting.
The Fauvist creations with their fierce, bold, brush-strokes conquered the colourful hearts of people!
