Beholding Value — The American abstract painter Agnes Martin once said, “The value of art is in the observer.” As we know, art has no singular, objective meaning and thus, value of art to each person will differ. Of course, there could be universal implications, but resonance and feeling through perceiving art remains each to their own in value. The intricacies of the ways to find value in art are therefore infinite, subject to people and their situations.
Valuing art can have ramifications on multiple levels of many kinds. Of course, monetary value stands obvious and tangible. But there lie many more values in terms of technicalities, skill and the art market. In resonating with a creation, one forms a relationship which rests upon the observed by the observer; the intensity, involvement, and depth of connect. What the observer is observing is the creation, but what becomes value is that which is observed.
Therefore, whatever universal or collective meanings creations may have, the true (found) value of art lies in the subjective, individual perception of the observer. One creation thus, could be special in different ways to different people for different reasons and that’s where the beauty of observation, interpretation and impact lies on an infinite scale.
