WHAT DOES A MASTERPIECE SAY? WHAT MAKES A MASTERPIECE?

The French Philosopher Albert Camus once said, “A true masterpiece does not tell everything.”

Irrespective of what the nature of this masterpiece may be, what it tells us might most definitely have a side of the untold, hidden and the ‘not disclosed, but enclosed’. The notions constructed by perception could be, with two bases therefore: that of the told and that of the untold, constituting of we could say, ‘everything’.

The essence of this quote lies in defining ‘everything’, with how and what facilitates the telling in the masterpiece implying the untold. This definition then leads to the consequence becoming/ evolving into a layered, true masterpiece. The told tales could be defined by curiosity and explorative judgement. At the same time, the untold could be explored as an endless array of thought, to manifest as effectively engaging to interpret and feel.

In an artistic context, multiple ramifications such as subtle symbolism, buried metaphor, underlying qualities of elements, historical / geographical narratives and contextually varying perceptions of change included, could contribute to ‘not telling everything’. The hidden aspects find more impact than the obviously told, when discovered / deciphered. Those which are found qualities in our perceived experience, are of the told tales, but the untold, are what we tell ourselves.

The told in relation to the untold therefore, extends and expands beyond the physical, tangible realms to create a virtual world of its own with memorable impact; a masterpiece. Hence, beyond the defined boundaries of what a true masterpiece tells, lies ‘everything’ that it does not tell. It is a ‘form of the hidden.’
