Legendary artist Jackson Pollock once said, “Art is coming face to face with oneself”. This statement possesses immense depth in meaning. As Creators, we have a gazillion considerations, questions, answers, sensitivities, situational responses and choices to make that lead us to making multiple decisions along the way from scratch to finish our paintings or products. Each decision we take after a basic extent, tends to intrinsically be a reflection of who we are maybe as artists, people, of different roles in life currently or of who we wish to be (become).
There is also the other end of creating art being reflective, perceiving art (as viewers). We perceive art for what it is, of course, from the lens of the Creator if we have the access to information to understand that but, at the end of the day, the way we experience art is determined by the way we are and who we are. We take what we want and we leave what we don’t based on who we are (our preferences, tastes, interests, alignments, mindsets and situational changes). This reflective subconscious and conscious process throughout, whether creating art or perceiving / viewing art is therefore a multi-fold process of coming face to face with ourselves.
The understated, subtle yet insanely powerful aspects of art lie in this very quality that art shows you not itself alone, but a robust part of who you are in that context, in relation to that content. The elegance of a dialogue being established between the viewer and the Creation or even Creator and Creation subjectively, is the fundamental inevitable basis to the ever evolving meanings of art we establish for ourselves. The important thing to understand here which is a face that often hides behind the curtain is the default position of us in relation to the art and the art in relation to us, combined, which is ultimately us in relation to us with art being a common equation in between. This is the simple but profound dynamic of both creating and receiving art. The very essence of the life in art is brought out so beautifully by Pollock where we actually realise that is we who encounter ourselves when we engage with art in any form. We come face to face with ourselves, whether it be light and shadow or water/ glass and reflection. Reflections tangibly and intangibly, in connection to what is being said, how, where, why and for the sensibility to be comprehensive, by whom.
The facets of discovery thus lie in coming face to face inevitably to experience something deeper and personal, in relation to what we see, what we do, what we feel, what we make as well as what we take. It is a phase of coming face to face with oneself which neither necessarily starts with the art nor ends with it. It is possibly that the consciousness comes into play then and then its role could become omnipresent or crucial in other contexts as well. It is to do with the authenticity and depth of the experience and impact respectively, that determines the nature of the phase of face to face and potentially makes a difference. It is with the honesty of the soul indeed, that we Create art and the same with which we perceive it, and thus, that’s where the special power of faces lie.
