American Artist Georgia O’Keeffe once said, “I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.”
There is a default, inherent uniqueness to what a Creator feels for, or towards their content. Whatever form, medium, channel or shape it may or may not take. What words can say may be viewed in a different capacity when it comes to the process of executing a work of art. Technically and practically, though, on a subconscious level, even if we as Creators use words to articulate the core of meaning and impact to viewers, there is an unspoken, sacred dialogue if I may say so, between the Creator and the Created.
What Ms O’Keeffe is saying here can be looked at through different lenses: on transcendental grounds, on spiritual journeys, from technical aspects of no fixed definition, from practical aspects of there existing no visual tangible words to define anything or from depth of feeling and emotion felt psychologically and so on. But, the important point here could be that it is about that ‘finding’. The finding of things one could say with colour and shape and what makes it transcend the realm of spoken / written word or any other way. The very nature (by default) of feeling, emotion, expression and perception can all be looked at as a thread of intangible realms of experience. But, that ‘finding’ comes from a certain quest by the Creator, which could stem from multiple arenas such as curiosity, impatience, emotional intensity, compulsive circumstances or simply exploratory bliss.
The magic is in finding what to say and how to say it once we have explored pathways to not only look beyond the comprehension through existing words, but also any other channels that may exist or come to mind in the given point in time; seeing it manifest or not, in the profoundness of the dimensional realms of intangible experience for each one of us.
As she states above, “any other way—things I had no words for.” Creating through colour and shape has an infinite, deep, indefinite, personal, and precious nature to it. This will be different for everyone, each to their own, though the meaning beyond, may vary from Creator to Creator and Viewer to Viewer, the beauty and grace lies in the authenticity of the ‘finding’ and honesty in executing. This shines through to provide eternal experience and memorable impact, touching lives in the most special ways.
