ASKING QUESTIONS IN ART

“Painting is the perfect way to learn about life, because the act of painting demands questions.”, says Robert Zandvliet.

Learning through painting is an infinitive opportunity to explore potential, providing in abundance, situational exploration. With a plethora of content, context, medium and perception, painting provides that pathway to not only learn, but also unlearn and relearn in many ways. In order to get to the essence of the subject or line of inquiry for the creation, questioning becomes integral to seeking answers and exploring various possibilities for increased diversity in ideation and execution.

The act of painting thus demands questioning on the minutest to largest levels. Ranging from concept, to colour, to texture, to contrast, to elements, composition, finesse and much more. This questioning could either be a conscious or subconscious process. Either way or even if spontaneous bits of both, carries value in terms of awareness as well as informative depth. Drowned in what I would like to call the intimate, sacred relationship between the creator and the canvas, the underlying process of questioning which the painting process inherently demands is a silent miracle. Providing the silent subjective space to have our brewing thoughts find a perfect ticking point, the form whether tangible or intangible can become magical.

Thus we continue, constantly learning, unlearning and relearning through the painting process creatively evolving and curiously questioning.
