When it comes to us being on either side of the spectrum – Creators or Viewers of art, there are various reasons why art may matter to us. There are also variant degrees of appeal and impact that variant kinds of art have on various people. This purely depends on one’s tastes, preferences, and perception from their point of view, context and content in terms of perspective, viewpoints and much more.
British Artist Roy Adzak once said, “Good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us”.
What an artwork does to us is what creates impact and carries memory as Viewers and what art does to us is what creates evolution and carries learnings for us as Creators. There can be some artworks that appeal to us visually. Of course, that matters, we are not demeaning or diminishing visual aspects but here it’s just that the impact and memory that is being spoken about as superior to categorize a work of art as good art. If it effectively makes us think, or shifts / moves something in us with that viewing experience whether a photograph, painting, print, installation, performance, or any other form.
“Art matters because it helps our brains make sense of our complex world. Art in its many forms is the best way for us to create a shared understanding, navigate challenging conversations, or simply to see an issue, an idea, or a person in a new perspective.” – Molly Giordano, Executive Director, Delaware Art Museum
