What colors tell us? How they speak to us and what they tell us?
Abstract paintings being mostly based on colour as their significant medium to communicate and convey feeling say much more than we see. They can affect the way we think and perceive everything. Colours have immense power. Not only in abstract paintings but also in realism. When we see the warmer colors, they could convey a variety of emotion and feeling. For example, a colour such as brown could mean strength, natural, regal, rooted and comfortable while a colour like red could convey danger, anger, violence and at the same time mean love, luck, and romance. A colour such as orange can coney palpable energy, freshness, and excitement in the air. Yellow can convey joy, optimism, brightness and so on.
The cooler colors on the other hand such as blue could mean serenity, calm, abundance, and at the same time be attached to cold, icy temperatures too. Greens could denote youth, eternity, freshness, energy, growth, and prosperity while also being symbolic of envy, jealousy, and greed. Purple can symbolize royalty and luxury while simultaneously denoting mystery and hidden nature.
The conventionally termed monochromatic colors which are technically not considered colors but are categorized broadly as tints, tones and shades are black, white, and grey. Where any colour mixed with white gives you a tint of the colour, any colour mixed with grey gives you a tone of the colour and any colour mixed with black gives you the shade to the colour. Therefore, with white – tint, with black – shade and with grey – tone.
The essence of symbolism through colour lies in its nature of usage in abstract paintings or in general, method of application, visual language in sensibility and thereafter perception upon viewing. Each to their own, colors convey more than just what they look like. They convey in layers and these layers can never end, as human perception in itself is endless. So are the possibilities of colors in themselves. Endless.
