THE ORIGIN OF ARTISTIC IDEAS AND THEIR JOURNEYS

THE HOW-AND-WHERE MAGIC –

The hows-and-the-wheres for an artist could be many things or simply, the process.

When one of us gets a ‘brilliant idea’, we get asked, “Where did you get that idea from?” or “How did you come up with something like that?”

Do we have the answers in entirety to questions of this nature or are they impossible to reach a pointed conclusion with? Well, maybe what makes the difference is the level of involvement we have. Many a time, we probably answer with an “I don’t know!” or “Just like that”. But the essence is deeper! The immense possibility of that ‘I don’t know’ calls for exploration of untapped personal territory.

The ‘I-don’t-knows’ of the-hows-and-the-wheres for an artist could be many things or simply, the process. How do we as creators think? How do we conceptualise? What shapes these processes? How do ideas come to us? It’s an interesting quest that’s ever engaging. The deeper we go, we get to where these ideas come from and where they go. And how ideas find us, or we find them, and what drives ideas to reach us.

The author of ‘Big Magic’, Elizabeth Gilbert once said “Ideas are driven by a single impulse: to be manifest.”

The idea of an idea manifesting itself could be beyond our comprehension. It may stay unanswered and unknown forever. That unknown may spark our curiosity committing to explore the idea. This commitment could play significant contextual roles in artistry.

A same idea could be a blessing in one context and a disaster in another. It depends on situational suitability and default consequences. Portrayal, representation, medium, surface, symbolism, metaphorical significance and skillsets are key factors for an Artist to influence the effectiveness of manifestation.

In the process of ideation and conceptualisation, the quest definitely leads deeper into the unknown, the known, the hidden, the revealed — all simultaneously. Self- reflection therefore is a powerful tool to keep questioning, re-purposing, re-positioning, introspecting and gaining clarity on why we do what we do, where and how we do.

That’s when the magic happens! Just by not knowing!
