Art and Resonance

As John Berger states, “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.” He also says, “We never look at just one thing: we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.” Well, art too follows a similar direction of wanting to connect with its audience, gaining a response of resonance and engagement.

The dialogue between the artist and their artwork, the dialogue then between the artwork and audience and more significantly, the dialogue between the artwork and ‘its audience’ is what we are looking at more in specific.

Every artwork according to me has ‘its audience’. There are people who might resonate with one kind of work but maybe not with another. Different people will resonate with different kinds of work for different reasons too! Each to their own. But, having said that, art is very emotional in my lens which is why it sometimes instantly connects or instantaneously absorbs and immerses the faculties of ‘its audience’. There can be no doubt in the fact that every person has ‘their own tastes and preferences’ about art. So does art have in pretty much making a person find purpose in itself. Either creating it or buying it or both even.

The essence of resonance in art lies in what one sees in it, in relation to  oneself pretty much the way one sees anything else in one’s life. Just that art goes deeper, beyond words and delves on feeling most of the time. How we feel when we come across an artwork is pretty much how we gauge our empathy or appreciation for it. Therefore, we are always in a place where “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.” As John Berger says and most definitely, “We never look at just one thing: we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.” Also as he states which as an artist for art, I vouch for!
