A Splash of Colour –
Abstract Expressionism began in the United States in the 1940s. This movement was characterised by gestural brush strokes, mark making and intrinsically spontaneous creative journeys. Inspired by the notions of the unconscious mind being the source, this movement operated via automatism for production.
Prominent Artists who took to this movement include Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Barenett Newman and Clyfford Still. Each Artist had a characteristic style of creating – while Jackson Pollock used action painting process to splash, drip and pour mediums onto the canvas on the floor, Mark Rothko carefully administered different layers onto his canvas with multi-forms, using the colour-field process.
The emphasis was on the emotions – every layer adding and contributing to create the energy. The Creators thus poured out their emotions in Colour. Jackson Pollock’s ‘Autumn Rhythm’ (featured above), showcases the dynamic, active, flowing nature of the action-painting-process as the creation itself! Mark Rothko’s ‘White Center’ (featured below), contains numerous fragile, thin layers of colour that construct the multi-forms.
The way in which these Creators stitched together the colour and the emotion is remarkable. Incredibly special!
