AN ARTISTIC MIND

“The Great Artist is a Simplifier.”, said the legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh. As artists, our minds are always buzzing with ideas, patterns, instances, situations, surroundings, colour, form and lighting –  a few of the details we take into consideration. The nature of the mind is to keep ticking with what it (is trained to pick up) needs to pick up and channel it into art or not. But what do our buzzing minds simplify? Well, firstly let’s look at whether simplification is necessary or not. When it is, how do we do it and what could be a potential application of the simplification?

The important thing is that we understand the complexly layered nature of the mind and the multiple ramifications of perception, conversion into creative meaning and executional applications as possibilities. The ways in which we choose to simplify this complexly perceived and processed information could be infinite in artistry and the answer to all above questions.

As art is about resonance, empathy and relatability, simplifying could indeed be the mark of a great artist as the essence of a memorable experience lies in that very thread of connection. This inevitably brings in a larger range as it becomes simpler from a creation standpoint itself. The intangible impressions that an artist leaves behind not only with each work but also more importantly with his or her sensibilities, is what remains immortal for times to come.

This, if kept simple helps hold the feelings for generations to come and that is what makes the great artist inherently, a simplifier – connected to the future, memorable in the present and rooted in the past.
