WHAT MAKES GREAT ABSTRACT PAINTINGS?

Why abstract paintings are important?

Abstract paintings make an unbelievable difference not only in corporate offices or commercial spaces but also in residential spaces! Our homes need art. It helps build organic, authentic, personalized energies for us in our spaces. The ability that art has, to communicate is unmatched, as it strikes chords with the deeper dimensions of feeling and emotion. The nature of this resonance can be very visceral. It is about making a space convey those tastes and preferences.  While a home reflects who we are, a painting could reflect many things from the past or aspirational for the future. Paintings for homes in Bengaluru come in many shapes, sizes, kinds, vibes and mediums. Also, what people takeaway when they come see paintings for sale in Bengaluru or anywhere else, can be dependent on multiple factors from their headspace situationally.  Art could mean many things to different people. But, what art means to you would determine what you resonate with, and thereby pick-up for your office or / and home to bring in that energy. This is also customized purchase in a spontaneous, organic way.

Abstract paintings also come in different forms due to multiple factors such as different techniques, artistic lens, colours, content, context, situational implication, targets, intentions, energies as well as a style choreographed to become an identity and symbolise power in the long run. Often we have questions in our heads about even the basic essence of abstract art. This leads to a curiosity that yearns to find more, see more, feel more and move beyond the boundaries of the known and already experienced. Therein, investments and creation, come with a reverse cycle of the great and the worse too.

What makes abstract art great or worse?

Well, whether it be paintings for homes in Bengaluru or paintings for sale in Bengaluru or anywhere around the world, as art viewers we always tend to think about the masterpeices we have heard of and seen as benchmarks for multiple things such as skill, fame, colour, technique, timelines and the charisma of the artist as a brand now so many centuries later still. But, what actually / really makes a masterpiece ?

In the bargain of famous artists’ work itself, we see some works being more spoken about, visible and in the limelight than many others which might sometimes turn out to be more masterful, profound or skill-oriented in terms of both, practical and intellectual learning from a creation point of view. There needs to be a reasoned trail as to why people attract themselves to art is what we think. But is there really an objective or even a subjective reason behind why one draws more from one piece and relatively lesser or nil amount of anything from another piece.

As art works on a deeper level than just the superficial aspects most of the time, there is an intangible scale in our heads and hearts to assess whether it resonates or not. Having said that, what makes an art work therefore great or worse in our minds? There are popular opinions many a time which take a subconscious upper hand in cases like the world famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci or David by Michelangelo. But, do we ask ourselves enough, what we as individuals really think about the piece for and by ourselves. If or when we had the chance to reflect or be for a while alone, with these same universally acclaimed great works of all time, what would we feel or what would it then probably project very authentically and intimately in that individualistic context then.

The essence of what makes a work of art in the abstract painting world, great or worse, whether abstract paintings for sale in Bengaluru, for your corporate offices or paintings for homes in Bengaluru, is what one feels very subjectively about it – one on one – each to their own. The reason being it isn’t even figuratively objective such as a landscape or portrait would identifiably be and that is exactly why the skill isn’t as figuratively evident but is existing an thriving through formations of line, dot, colour, texture, layers and so on, to complete the circle. The energy and technical aspects allow more of a raw form thereby with abstract works in relativity to the conventional techniques in any kind of figurative study.

What one resonates with most will be the greatest best work of art in the world to them and respectively for another and likewise for another or not. The important underlying layer to note here is that as Creators though we do consider certain works as masterpieces and these also variably ranked or listed as per different channels or organisations taking up the tasks. There can be no universally agreeable ranking of masterpieces or even claim of all masterpieces that are evidently still in good condition all over the world. What is important is that we look at everything with our point of view after understanding the artists’ lens or context and then interpreting for ourselves to takeaway something and reflect for ourselves beyond a certain instantaneous resonance or superficial liking alone, in some cases.

How can we effectively understand and reflect on what about a work of art draws us?

We might ask ourselves often what does art mean and who decides what art means. Well, a very valid point of thought to ponder upon as the case may be but let’s look at an example for example how can we understand the works of an artist such as Pablo Picasso, so widely celebrated, globally acclaimed, cherished, and richly collected, we can understand his work on many levels all of which comes to us maybe through different works in different ways. A crucial point to keep in mind is that we start to understand art on a deeper level only upon looking at multiple works by various artists in different styles, genres and contexts. Even with the same artist, whether there is a structure or not to how he / she operates over the years, an oeuvre is a journey, an experience and a whole new trip of discovery for us viewers when we go through it.

When we are drawn to a work of art, whether abstract paintings for homes In Bengaluru or paintings for sale in Bengaluru, there are many ways we could find out why and many layers that appeal to us consciously as well as subconsciously:

  1. Personal preferences and tastes we have in general, in life, influence our appetite and nature of palette in art as well. We subconsciously gravitate what feeds or caters to our vibe, our energy, our personal feelings being resonant with as a cause and consequence.
  2. Thematic resonance can become another appealing factor where even if it slightly out of the box with what we usually tend to be drawn towards, the theme and its representation or symbolism somewhere in the depths manifests what we’re looking for in our spaces and then it fonds a place in our hearts.
  3. Depiction speciality, in terms of what is being depicted being close to our heart due to multiple reasons one may have with situations faced or energies felt in order to have a more participative or personalised space. One could have a painting of Kailash Manasarovar in their space that means so much to them while someone may have a painting of the school building they studied in or someone may have an abstract composition that’s based on inspiration and motivation for example.
  4. Meaning and Harmony, many a time come into play irrespective of preferences and tastes as it becomes about the meaning taking a supreme hand as well as aesthetic harmony in the space being assigned by designers or creators.
  5. The beauty about finding out what resonates with one and why is a journey of one’s own evolution and a growing connection with the work itself with gradual eventually deeper engagement. There can be the trajectory of also falling in love at first sight in which case there is always that sensed special connection from the very beginning with no end. But otherwise, on initial resonance, there is the travel of a lifetime and perhaps generations to come through too, to find out what the creation means to them over time and tide of life.
  6. There is also the aspect of what the work says to you which is a question that can easily yield an answer as to why you like what you like on a simpler level. What does the creation do, how does it speak to you or does it not, how does it energise the space and therefore transform a certain functionality thereof.

How do we define greatness in art even if it be gauged on a subjective basis?

The path to greatness and mastery as we’ve all heard of course, comes with practice, dedication, familiarity, awareness, focus, clarity, purpose and much more – art is nothing different. There can be all these qualities or some but never none, in order to create and impact and create a legacy or milestone in the industry, especially globally.

On the basis of how real a landscape looks, or how real a portrait looks, or how edible the cheese in a still life painting looks can be a universal way of gauging that this looks more real than that or vice versa but what about with abstract works? Well, the distinction is a tricky one to put a label on the process to gauge in this case. It is probably about what it associates with, a concept, symbolism, colour exploration, experimental methods or alternative processes and much more. I would therefore say whether abstract paintings for homes on sale in Bengaluru or anywhere around the world, the doors have been and will remain open for perception, reception and applause or criticism. There is no bar to perceiving / being perceived and likewise, creating perception in the world of abstract paintings.

Whether it be art styles, artists, particular sets of paintings, a collection, a gallerist showcase or even an art studio, the variety or diversification, mediums, surfaces, genre of art, categorised dealings and positioning make a world of a difference to the works that actually matter to the potential takers in the market. That is what makes art valuable. The organisations such as Sotheby’s or Christie’s which are famous running auction houses are the well versed kings in the space of art being waited for with anticipated prices and potential takers all with exceptional purchasing power.

Now, does this power of investment make a work of art a great one is another question to ask but the game to win the answer to it is to look ay which side are we looking at it from or where we wish to be as it is the tangible part of the art world which is generically seldom spoken about. Moreso with abstract painting.

Therefore,

While it is important we understand what kind of art appeals to art and what makes it great in our eyes and to our hearts, it is important to respect what the world claims famous and great too, we do not need to place bets on why something is greater is than the other as it is an unending debate of sorts that’ll never have a logical, rational or definite ending as it is indeed the inherent nature of art to be indefinite, undefined, abundant or scarce, secretive or revealing, shallow or deep, light or heavy, all to the reception or perception of the viewer and thereby, inconclusive from an objective lens in anyway.

Whether gauged with the lenses of artistic, economic, social, political, psychological, logical, physiological and so on, the many lenses we may find relevant as the case may be, it would enrich our experience of the work if we keep in mind what lens the Creator has created the work with to keep the subjective greatness of the work in whatever scale, in context most importantly. This will help keep the nature of content neutral in our heads as well as look at it without a tilted bias in particular independent of individual beliefs, systems and well-oiled mechanics of society.

Therefore, what makes art great is what we choose to call great for ourselves and if in unison, what the world wishes or deems to be great. Keeping all our inhibitions aside, scales always vary and opinions are inevitably many each to their own. This is what makes the synergy of the arts so interesting, layered, deep and juicy to discuss, debate, learn and share insights learnings and discoveries that can change whole approaches, narratives and can even turn around to re-establish false facts to bring in revelations.

In a world with so much evidential power, the greatness lies in the intangible intricacies of the lesser see, seldom explored, and the rare joys of finding the fragility of what art means to us, and what we mean to the world of art.
